IT Attorney Brings Additional International Privacy Experience to Firm

PALO ALTO, Calif. – LAWFUEL – Legal Newswire – Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Peter F. McLaughlin has joined its Silicon Valley office as a senior counsel and a member of the Intellectual Property Department and the Privacy, Security, and Information Management, and Information Technology & Outsourcing Practices.

“Peter’s addition is the next step in the firm’s strategic plan to strengthen and grow our data privacy and security team both on the West Coast and nationally,” said Sharon R. Barner, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. “His recent experience as assistant general counsel and global privacy leader for a Fortune 20 company will be a great resource to the firm’s clients throughout the country.”

McLaughlin joins the firm from Cardinal Health where his experience as a corporate lawyer and business advisor included international privacy compliance, information technology (IT) compliance, IT transactions, information security, data management, and IT outsourcing. He was responsible for driving the strategy, policy and implementation of the company’s first global privacy program and advising business units on products that store personal information. He also led the company’s IT transactions, and technology and data aspects of its corporate transactions. McLaughlin’s projects included the $3.3 billion sale of a pharmaceutical group with personal information and interconnected IT systems spanning 12 countries.

His data privacy experience includes several evolving issues. In particular, he was among the first lawyers to prepare and submit a Binding Corporate Rules application to address international data transfers; he secured registration of the firm’s SOX whistleblower hotline in France; he advised corporate clients on the compliant use of centralized human resources databases and Internet monitoring software; and he led face-to-face negotiations with European data protection regulators.

Prior to joining Cardinal Health, McLaughlin was assistant general counsel of Sun Microsystems. He also spent five years in private practice in Europe.

He is co-chair of the ABA’s Privacy, Security & Data Management subcommittee within the Business Law Section’s Cyberspace Committee, and co-chairs the Privacy Law Committee and is on the Board of the International Technology Law Association. He also is a frequent speaker on data privacy and security.
