Legal Announcements – Clyde & Co advises on new SPEEDCAR motor racing series

Legal Newswire – Clyde & Co has advised Speedcar International Limited in relation to the soon-to-be-launched SPEEDCAR Series, a new motor racing series featuring globally renowned drivers, an audience of billions and millions of dollars in prize money.

Featuring 24 drivers competing in identical V8 620bhp stock cars, deliberately lacking electronic driver aids the series promises close and electrifying racing, and thrilling viewing for both TV and trackside spectators alike.

The SPEEDCAR Series was conceived and is set to fill a niche in the regional motor racing industry, taking place over eight weekends in winter and spanning the Middle East, Asia and Australasia.

Clyde & Co worked with the Speedcar team on a number of matters including commercial contracts, trade marks, sponsorship and exploitation of intellectual property. Clyde & Co also advised on matters relating to the relationship between Speedcar and GP2 Asia, Speedcar’s co-partner in the Grand Racing Series.

The SPEEDCAR Series will form part of the Grand Racing events featuring high profile 2-day race meetings in partnership with GP2 Asia. The series also has formal tie-ins with Formula 1 in Bahrain and Malaysia.

The core Clyde & Co team advising Speedcar included Rob Deans (intellectual property), Zaid Gardner and Miriam McGregor (technology, media & commercial licensing) and Dubai based commercial partner Anthony Garrod.

Rola Madi, Director, Legal at Union Properties and Speedcar, has been working on the development of the series for the best part of a year. “It’s extremely gratifying to have a project such as the SPEEDCAR series come together. All our advisors have contributed to the progress to date and we’re looking forward to working in the future with Rob and the Clyde & Co team as the series starts and things really take off.”

Rob Deans commented “We’re thrilled to have been involved in this cutting edge and world class series which heralds in a new era for motor racing in the region. The effort, enthusiasm and ability that Rola Madi and rest of the Speedcar team have displayed in pulling the series together has been phenomenal, it has involved a complex series of specialist transactions within a rapid execution timeframe. It’s a great sign for the sport that the team pulling it all together displays such passion and drive.”

Exhibition events for the Speedcar Series recently took place in November at the Bahrain International Circuit and at the Motorcity Dubai Motorsport Festival. The first race of the SPEEDCAR Series takes place at the Dubai Autodrome on 25-26 January 2008.
