Los Angeles, June 11, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Morrison & Foerster LLP announced today a victory in a patent infringement case in favor of the firm’s client, Mr. Armando Amado, inventor of a software application that links an Excel spreadsheet to an Access database in a “live link” fashion. The jury awarded $8.96 million to Mr. Amado for sales of the software between March 1997 and July 2003.
Mr. Amado developed the program in 1990 and then approached Microsoft to sell the program to them in 1992, which they declined to purchase. Mr. Amado received his patent in 1994. Microsoft came out with the application in their 1995 software programs.

Vince Belusko, Morrison & Foerster partner and lead attorney for Mr. Amado, commented: “We are pleased with the verdict, which clearly states that Mr. Amado’s patent rights have been vindicated. This has been a long struggle for our client and he is finally getting what’s owed to him, recognition for a valuable innovation. This is a classic David v. Goliath case. The attorneys at our firm, Morrison & Foerster, are proud to have assisted Mr. Amado in this case and to bring him the recognition he so greatly deserves.”

Mr. Amado commented: “This is a great day to finally get the validation that my invention has value. I am pleased that Microsoft has been forced to recognize this innovation as a useful and unique application that benefits their millions of users. I would like to thank my team of lawyers at Morrison & Foerster for believing in me and my innovation.”

The attorneys from Morrison & Foerster that participated in the case include partners Vince Belusko, Charles Barquist and Hector Gallegos, Of Counsel Nicole Smith (the in-court trial team) and associates Scott Moore and Monica Scheetz all from the Los Angeles office.
