Musarraf Receives Pakistan Supreme Court Victory – Promises Civilian Rule

LAWFUEL – A decision of Pakistan’s Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge to President Musharraf’s rule, which now removes any legal obstacle to his re-election.

The court, which is friendly to Musharraf and has demonstrated that with today’s decision. The decision also means that he can be sworn in as a civilian leader of the country for another, five-year term.

Musharraf claims he will lead the country towards democracy following the court decision.

The president was afraid a decision might go against him, resulting in his declaring emergency rule almost three weeks ago when he sacked the chief justice and cleared the court of judges that were unfriendly to his military rule. The resulting demonstrating and violence placed the country on the edge of internal war.
