NEW YORK, April 28 – James W. Quinn, chairman of the litigation department of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, one of the world’s leading law firms, is a contributing author of a new book on legal trends in the entertainment, sports and media industries. His chapter on sports law is included in the book, called The Legal Sides of Entertainment, Sports & Media, which has been published this month.

Quinn, who is one of the nation’s top litigators and has been involved in the sports business for more than 30 years, says because of the complexity of sports law today there is no single set of law books or statutes encompassing the practice of sports law.
“Casey Stengel was wrong: you can’t just look it up,” Quinn says in the book, referring to the legendary baseball player and manager. “Sports law is a combination of many different legal disciplines covering … contract law, antitrust law, labor law, copyright law, trademark law, and even criminal law, along with a host of other legal disciplines.”
Quinn’s chapter, “Sports Law: Beyond the Media Madness,” provides a brief history of sports law beginning with the founding of baseball in the 1860s and an explanation of how and why sports law has jumped off the sports pages and onto the business pages of the nation’s newspapers, as the lines separating sports, entertainment and the media have blurred. Quinn also takes a look at where sports law is headed.
The Legal Sides of Entertainment, Sports & Media is published by Aspatore Books (www.aspatore.com) and is part of the publisher’s “Inside The Minds” series.
