NEW YORK–LAWFUEL – The Law News Wire – Today’s issue of The National Law Journal features profiles of the “50 Most Influential Women In Law,” selected by the newspaper’s reporters and editors. The listing, the paper’s first since 1998, reflects the growing influence of women attorneys, in-house counsel and law professors within the profession, business, government and public affairs. Profiles of all 50 lawyers headline the May 28th issue of The National Law Journal and are also online at www.nlj.com.
The group was selected from more than 200 reader-nominated names as well as submissions from the NLJ’s editorial staff. Judges and nonpracticing lawyers were not eligible. The listing includes such high-profile individuals as:
Maureen Mahoney, a former legal prodigy who argued her first U.S. Supreme Court case at 34, helped to defend the University of Michigan Law School’s affirmative action policy, and whose clients have included the U.S. House of Representatives and the government of Saudi Arabia.
Karen J. Mathis of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter in Denver, who, as president of the American Bar Association, has campaigned to preserve attorney-client privilege and the right to effective counsel.
Kathleen Sullivan of Quinn, Emanuel, Urquhart, Oliver & Hedges in Silicon Valley, a leading constitutional scholar and former dean of Stanford Law School.
Patricia M. Wald, who retired as a federal appeals court judge eight years ago to help build legal systems for strife-torn countries like Rwanda, Cambodia and Yugoslavia.
The list also reflects the staying power of many of these attorneys. Ten of the women highlighted appeared on the NLJ’s first list of the most influential women attorneys published nine years ago and eight were selected as top women litigators by the paper in 2001.
“These influential women have demonstrated the power to change the legal landscape, shape public affairs and launch industries,” said Rex Bossert, editor in chief of The National Law Journal. “At the same, it’s clear that women lawyers continue to face issues related to career and promotion; women make up about half of all law students, but only 17 percent of the partners at major U.S. law firms.”
