No. 32

Flanagan is NZ’s premier plaintiff-side commercial litigator, like Fionnghuala Cuncannon and yet another Meredith Connell alumni, likely having argued more leading Fair Trading Act and Financial Markets Conduct Act cases than any other lawyer.
Most recently he acted for the Ministry of Education in successful claims against James Hardie and Carter Holt Harvey for faulty building products—likely NZ’s largest civil case.
His government agency work includes multiple high-profile Commerce Commission claims (Ribena, Viagogo, Jetstar, Nurofen, Vodafone, Spark) and FMA actions against banks, funds, insurers. A Harvard Law School graduate and former Fulbright scholar, he serves on the Solicitor-General’s Prosecution Panel for Cartel Offences.
His expertise extends to competition law, contested shareholder disputes, novel commercial claims.
As Principal Crown Prosecutor, he’s led murder, blackmail, perjury trials. His practice encompasses government departments, private equity funds, closely held companies, high-net-worth individuals. At No. 31, Flanagan represents plaintiff-side power against well-resourced defendants. His next move is almost certainly the independent bar.
