OKLAHOMA CITY– LAWFUEL – Law News Network–James Winchester, incoming Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, will deliver the winter 2006 commencement address at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Bishop Angie W. Smith Chapel at Oklahoma City University School of Law. The title of his remarks is “Answering the Call.”
Winchester, a 1976 graduate of OCU School of Law, practiced law in western Oklahoma before being named associate district judge for Caddo County in 1983. At 30 he became one of the youngest district judges in the state when he was appointed by Gov. George Nigh as District Judge for the Sixth Judicial District. Winchester served in that position for 15 years. He then served as a U.S. administrative law judge in Oklahoma City and New Orleans for two years.
Winchester was appointed in 2000 as a member of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma by then-Gov. Frank Keating. He currently serves as vice chief justice and on Jan. 1 will assume the responsibilities of chief justice.
Winchester was selected as an Outstanding State Trial Court Judge by the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers’ Association. He is a past president of the Oklahoma Judicial Conference and a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma.
Winchester lives in Chickasha, Okla., with his wife, state Rep. Susan Winchester, and their son.
