Paul D. Patton, Leading Financial Institutions Lawyer, Joins Debevoise

New York – July 17, 2012 – Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced that Paul D. Patton has joined the firm as Counsel in its New York office and a member of the firm’s Corporate Department and Financial Institutions and Banking Groups.

Mr. Patton joins Debevoise from Morgan Stanley, where he served as an Executive Director, advising the firm and its national bank subsidiaries on a broad range of regulatory and transactional issues, including charter conversions, corporate restructurings and outsourcings, new product launches, regulatory examinations, corporate governance, inter-affiliate transactions, and emerging issues in the prudential supervision and regulation of financial institutions. As General Counsel of Morgan Stanley Private Bank, he assisted in the expansion of its offering of deposit, credit and trust products to Morgan Stanley’s global wealth management clientele with a nationwide network of over 17,000 financial advisors.

Mr. Patton has over twenty years of experience as in-house counsel at major financial institutions, including the U.S. subsidiaries of National Westminster Bank Plc and Royal Bank of Scotland. Mr. Patton was also the principal bank regulatory counsel to American Express Company for nearly a decade. His portfolio of experience includes advising American Express’ former international bank subsidiary, American Express Bank Ltd., which conducted correspondent banking and international private banking activities through a network of offices in 42 countries. Mr. Patton began his career as a staff attorney at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and has substantial experience with the bank examination process and enforcement matters.

Mr. Patton received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his B.A. with Distinction from Swarthmore College. He is a member of the Bars of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey. Mr. Patton is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Banking Law Committee and the Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals.
