Philadelphia, Pa. – November 2, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Pepper Hamilton LLP announced that April M. Byrd, a former Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division, has joined the firm as of counsel in the Philadelphia office. She will be a member of the firm’s Health Effects Litigation Practice Group and focus on white collar and corporate investigation work.

Ms. Byrd has spent the last six years prosecuting cases for the United States Attorney’s offices in Delaware and the District of Columbia.
Most recently, she was Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wilmington, Delaware. She was responsible for all aspects of the federal criminal practice, including supervision of grand jury investigations, witness and target interviews, plea negotiations, trials and appeals. She prosecuted complex federal criminal cases, including those involving drugs and violent crimes, and white collar and economic crimes. She also served as the ethics advisor for the office. Earlier, she was Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Grand Jury Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Byrd is an adjunct professor in trial practice at Villanova University School of Law. She also serves as president of the board of directors of Villanova Law School’s Minority Alumni Society and chairwoman of the law school’s Minority Mentoring Committee.
Ms. Byrd is a graduate of Swarthmore College (B.A. cum laude in political science, 1991) and Villanova University School of Law (J.D. magna cum laude 1995).
Pepper’s Health Effects Litigation Practice Group includes 50 lawyers who counsel and defend clients in the health effects area. The groups defends claims of adverse health effects from ingestion of or exposure to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, radiation, chemicals and environmental substances; claims relating to pharmaceutical clinical trials; and claims of alleged personal injury from commercial and consumer products.
