(New York) On May 17, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s pro bono work on behalf of asylum clients referred by Immigration Equality—a national organization fighting for equality under U.S. immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals—was recognized by that group at its 2012 Safe Haven Awards ceremony in New York, NY.

Akin Gump was honored for handling a number of challenging cases, including asylum victories for a gay Jamaican who sought asylum on the grounds that he faced anti-gay persecution in his home country and a Russian asylum seeker who similarly feared persecution due to his sexual orientation during his imminent military service, as well as asylum processing for individuals fleeing AIDS-based persecution, including a mother from the Ivory Coast and a family from Kyrgyzstan.

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 850 attorneys in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
