Prostitution Law Change Author Believes Law Working Well

LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – The author of the prostitution law says it is working well following the arrest of a woman who allegedly sold her daughter for sex.

The South Auckland woman will be charged under the Prostitution Reform Act for marketing her 16-year-old to a client.

Labour MP Tim Barnett, who sponsored the Prostitution Reform Bill, says the case highlights how the bill is working effectively to clamp down on the actual criminal and not vulnerable youth. He says it’s an example of the law getting the person allegedly causing the real harm.

Barnett’s bill became law in 2003 and he says the Act takes moral judgements out of the law and places responsibility on the criminal.
