Rachael Reed KC

LawFuel Power List 2025

No. 20

Reed continues tackling high-profile cases at the intersection of criminal and civil law. Her October 2024 Whakaari Management High Court appeal challenging the company’s conviction over the 2019 volcanic eruption killing 22 people argued the ruling had “concerning implications” for landlords permitting adventure activities.

This year she excoriated the government over its poorly considered plans to reform the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act, calling it a “serious civil service process failure.”

Her involvement in the Dilworth School class action (potentially NZ’s largest non-government compensation claim) positions her at the forefront of institutional abuse litigation. Her defence of former CBL chief executive Peter Harris (SFO prosecution) and workplace complaint representations demonstrate versatility in fraud, financial services, and regulatory enforcement.

Appointed KC in 2017, she’s Deputy Chair of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Disciplinary Tribunal and elected NZBA Council Member. Reed’s listing reflects sustained excellence in white-collar crime, regulatory battles, and complex civil litigation across criminal/civil divides, despite a quieter 2025 year.

She remains a solid power player at the higher echelons of the List.
