(LAWFUEL) – A 22-year-old Spanish man will face Perth Magistrates Court today charged with smuggling more than two kilograms of drugs into Australia.
Customs officers at Perth International Airport stopped the man for a baggage check after he arrived on a flight from Dubai last night.
An x-ray of the man’s baggage revealed a possible concealment in the bottom of his suitcase.
The man was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and his bag was forensically examined.
A white powder was allegedly located, which preliminary testing indicated to be heroin.
The suitcase is currently undergoing further forensic testing to determine the exact weight and purity of the drug.
The AFP charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled substance under Section 307.1 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is a fine of $825,000 and/or life imprisonment.
