Suing the Rogue Robot

Suing the Rogue Robot

Can you sue a rogue robot?

It’s a question troubling prosecutors in Germany after a robot in a VW plant crushed a worker.

The bizarre ‘twist’ that lead to the worker’s death has also left prosecutors scratching their heads as to who and what to sue.

The robot was designed to manipulate auto parts as part of the assembly process, but although human error seemed responsible, given that the robot was programmed to do something other than kill workers,

The 22 year old man died Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said.

The worker was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said.
