Sullivan & Worcester Promotes Two to Partner


Boston, MA (January 3, 2019) – Sullivan & Worcester announced today that two associates, Maura C. Carney and Eric D. Simanek, have been promoted to partner.

The new partners as of January 1, 2019 are:

Maura Carney (Boston) is a partner in the Trusts & Estates Group and the Tax Department in Sullivan & Worcester’s Boston office. Her practice focuses on sophisticated estate planning for high-net-worth individuals, including the preparation of wills, trusts, and prenuptial agreements; lifetime wealth transfer strategies, including the use of leveraging techniques such as grantor retained annuity trusts, sales to intentionally-defective grantor trusts, and qualified personal residence trusts; estate and trust administration, including the preparation of estate and gift tax returns and handling of probate court matters; and charitable planning, including establishing charitable trusts and foundations and assisting organizations that wish to obtain tax-exempt status. 

Before joining Sullivan & Worcester, Maura was in the Private Client Group of another Boston firm and served as a law clerk to the Honorable George A. O’Toole Jr. of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. 

Eric D. Simanek (Washington, DC) is a partner in the Investment Management Group. His practice focuses on financial services, including mutual funds, closed-end funds, exchange-traded funds and commodity pools, and their boards of directors on issues regarding regulatory compliance and product development. He assists clients in navigating laws administered by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and National Futures Association (NFA), and state securities laws. He also advises investment advisers on issues relating to registration and compliance policies and procedures. Eric often advises exchange-traded funds (including exchange-traded commodity pools) in connection with their exemptive relief and the launch of new funds, as well as non-investment companies on issues regarding their status under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Eric previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable William E. Smith of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.
