The ABA Journal has taken a look at the lawyers who could run America - the next top lawyers for a McCain or an Obama presidency. The magazine has matched the job with the person who is most often mentioned for it.

Who’s the person for the top spot, the Attorney General? From the Obama camp comes:

Eric Holder
Currently: Partner, Covington & Burling
Law school: Columbia (1976)

Holder and Obama have been friends since they hit it off at a dinner party in 2004. He is the consummate Washington insider—a familiar fixture in the Clinton administration, but well-known to Republican administrations as well. Best known as a prosecutor, Holder was fresh out of law school when he was assigned to the newly formed public integrity section of the Justice Department. There, he helped prosecute several high-profile defendants, including a judge, a diplomat, an assistant U.S. attorney and a leading organized crime figure.

And for McCain, the Attorney General position:

A.B. Culvahouse Jr.
Currently: Chair, O’Melveny & Myers
Law school: New York University (1973)

Culvahouse moves behind the scenes on the inside of insiders’ Washington. He was President Reagan’s White House counsel from 1987 to 1989 and advised the president during the Iran-Contra investigation. He was Robert Bork’s handler in his unsuccessful bid for confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.
