Two Cruise Ships Crash In Mexican Port

October 2, 2009 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports two Royal Caribbean passenger cruise ships collided in Cozumel. The ships involved in the collision were the Carnival Legend an 88,500 ton ship able to carry 2,124 passengers and the Royal Caribbean ship Enchantment of the Seas an 80,700 ton ship able to hold 2,252 passengers.

The collision took place when the Carnival Legend was maneuvering away from the port in Cozumel just after 6:00 p.m. According to one witness the ship as it was getting closer to the Enchantment of the Seas and a tug boat tried to get between the ships to stop the Legend from striking the other ship. The tug was not able to get between the ships prior to them colliding. After the collision the Enchantment of the Seas leaned to the side for a brief time.

According to reports the damages to the Enchantment of the sea included damaged rails, and stem, there is also some minor damage to some of the open deck areas. A witness also stated they could hear breaking glass.

According to the Carnival, Royal Caribbean cruise line the passengers on the two cruise ships that collided were uninjured. They have reported that there have been no passenger injuries and the ships have been released by the authorities to continue on their route to Belize where the two ships were headed prior to the crash.
