DENVER – In a private ceremony this morning, John F. Walsh was sworn in by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Wiley Y. Daniel as Colorado’s United States Attorney. Members of Walsh’s family attended the swearing in. John Walsh replaces David Gaouette, who served as U.S. Attorney from January 11, 2009 through August 15, 2010. Gaouette replaced Troy Eid, who was appointed U.S. Attorney by President George W. Bush. Eid resigned the post on January 10, 2009.
On April 14, 2010, Walsh was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Attorney. Walsh was then unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on August 5, 2010. He reported to duty today, August 16, 2010.
“I am humbled by the confidence the President and the United States Senate has shown in me,” Walsh said. “I take my oath seriously, and will represent the citizens of Colorado and the United States as an advocate of justice, but also as an proponent for fairness.”
In 1986, Walsh graduated with honors and Order of the Coif from Stanford Law School, where he was Senior Notes Editor of the Stanford Law Review. Upon graduating, he served as a clerk to the Honorable Skelly Wright of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Immediately prior to becoming U.S. Attorney, Walsh was a member and shareholder of Hill & Robbins, specializing in complex civil litigation and class actions in the areas of securities and antitrust. He also handled internal investigations and white collar criminal cases.
Walsh spent eight years at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, California, from 1987 to 1995. During this time, he prosecuted many complex federal white collar violations, mainly dealing with securities offenses. The cases he tried included insider trading offenses, market manipulations, and violations of the securities anti-fraud provisions. He served as chief of the Major Frauds section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office from 1993 to 1995, supervising 35 Assistant U.S. Attorneys prosecuting white collar offenses. Walsh participated in many notable white collar investigations, including those of Charles Keating, Michael Milken, and Arizona Governor J. Fife Symington.
In 1995, Walsh returned to Denver to join the law firm Holland & Hart, LLP, and became a partner in 1997. In 1999, he left the firm to become a member of Hill & Robbins, P.C. He maintains a high level of community involvement. He is chairman of the board of Invest in Kids, a Colorado nonprofit focused on the development and dissemination of evidence-based early childhood education and health programs, and is a member of the board of the Colorado Lawyers Committee.
Walsh is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA 2010, and Colorado SuperLawyers, and has received Martindale-Hubbell’s highest “AV” rating.
Walsh is married to Lisa Christian, and has three children.
