CHARLOTTE (April 22) Lawfuel – Kilpatrick Stockton announced today that Partner Lois Colbert has been named the firm’s Charlotte Office Managing Partner.

Ms. Colbert becomes the first woman to head a Kilpatrick Stockton office. Kilpatrick Stockton has a history of valuing diversity. In 2007, Diane Prucino was named the firm’s Co-Managing Partner with Co-Managing Partner Bill Dorris which made Kilpatrick Stockton the first AmLaw 100 firm headquartered in the Southeast to have a woman in a firmwide managing partner position.
Ms. Colbert has been with Kilpatrick Stockton for over 15 years. She is listed as an Employee Benefits/ERISA “Super Lawyer” in North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine. Ms. Colbert is a partner in the firm’s Corporate Department where she has a comprehensive employee benefits practice with concentration in the areas of executive compensation (including deferred compensation and related 409A compliance), retirement plan qualification (including drafting and obtaining Internal Revenue Service determination letters on tax-qualified status), equity compensation, negotiation of employee benefit aspects of business transactions, welfare benefit plans (including HIPAA privacy compliance), fiduciary responsibility and prohibited transactions (including obtaining Department of Labor exemptions). She represents public and private companies as to ongoing compliance for tax-qualified retirement plans and equity compensation arrangements.
Ms Colbert is active in the community, particularly with the American Lung Association where she is a member of the North Carolina Leadership Board and was former treasurer and secretary of the North Carolina Chapter. She is an active volunteer in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern North Carolina Chapter and works on numerous pro bono projects.
Ms. Colbert is a member of Labor and Employment Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) and its Employee Benefits Committee, for which she serves as an Associate Senior Editor of the ABA’s Employee Benefits Law publication and formerly served as Management Co-Chair of the Plan Design, Qualification and Administration Subcommittee. She is a member of the National Association of Stock Plan Professionals (NASPP) and a board member/treasurer and former president of the NASPP Carolinas Chapter. Ms. Colbert is a Member of the Southern Employee Benefits Conference. She is a member of the Tax Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association where she is a former editor of the Tax Law Section newsletter. Ms. Colbert is a frequent speaker on various employee benefits and executive compensation topics.
Ms. Colbert is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and earned her BS in Accountancy with high honors from the University of Illinois. She is a member of the Illinois, Washington, DC and North Carolina Bars.
