WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 LAWFUEL - The Law News Network -- Progress for America (PFA) today announced a 14-state, 2-week barnstorm by 15 of Supreme Court nominee Judge John Roberts' closest friends, former colleagues and prominent legal experts in advance of the September 6th Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. These key personal and legal surrogates will call for history to guide Roberts' confirmation process and will specifically emphasize the fair treatment of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her 1993 Senate hearings. "This is about fairness," said Brian McCabe, president of PFA. "The same standard Clinton-nominee Ruth Bader Ginsburg was held to by a Democrat- controlled Congress ought to be good enough for Judge Roberts." Despite her background as a very liberal ACLU attorney, the following are facts about Justice Ginsburg's hearing: * Lasted a total of 4 days. * Ginsburg was not required to discuss her legal views on a host of issues, including: abortion, gay rights, public education, labor laws, religion and the state, the Second Amendment, and voting rights. -- When asked for specific opinions during confirmation hearings, Justice Ginsburg politely replied, "I prefer not to address a question like that" and "I would prefer to await a particular case." * Even Senators who strongly disagreed with Justice Ginsburg's personal political views voted for her confirmation. She was confirmed by the Senate on a vote of 96-3 (8/3/93). The "Precedent, Not Politics" Roberts Confirmation Tour will include the following states: Michigan, August 16th: John Smietanka and Victoria Toensing -- Smietanka is the former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan for 12 years who became friends with Roberts when they were nominated for U.S. Circuit Courts.
