WASHINGTON, June 4 LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire — Speaker Nancy Pelosi
issued the following statement today following the federal indictment of
Congressman William Jefferson of Louisiana:

“The charges in the indictment against Congressman Jefferson are
extremely serious. While Mr. Jefferson, just as any other citizen, must be considered innocent until proven guilty, if these charges are proven true, they constitute an egregious and unacceptable abuse of public trust and power.

“As we have demonstrated in implementing tough ethics reforms and
passing tough lobbying reforms already this year, Democrats are committed
to upholding a high ethical standard and eliminating corruption and
unethical behavior from the Congress.”

LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire – Paris Hilton’s first night in jail has passed well, according to reports and, according to website TMZ.com, she is a “model citizen” in jail, polite, gracious and thankful.

Wearing a short-sleeved, orange jumpsuit and has handled the first hours of incarceration well. While not teary, she has been kept away from other inmates in her 12×8 feet cell. She’s permitted only one hour a day out of her cell.

Richard Hutton, Hilton’s lawyer, said the idea of getting the sentence over was Hilton’s. TMZ quoted Hutton: “Paris didn’t want to make a media circus out of the event. She just quietly wanted to start serving her time.”
