WINSTON-SALEM, NC – 21 June – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC today announced that Duke University has joined the Womble Carlyle Scholars Program. Duke University will help Womble Carlyle identify candidates for its annual minority scholarship and also assist with the distribution of the funds.
“We are very excited to add Duke University to our list of schools that work with us each year to distribute these scholarship funds to deserving students,” said Gloria Agard, director of diversity and workplace initiatives for Womble Carlyle. “Last year, our first year for the program, proved even more successful than we’d anticipated. I am looking forward to again attracting very talented students to our program and then helping them grow professionally.”
The Womble Carlyle Scholars Program provides one $4,000 scholarship annually to a minority, second-year law student at each of nine law schools throughout the Southeast. The students must have excellent academic performance records, an aptitude for personal or professional development outside the school environment and significant community service contributions. Each Womble Carlyle Scholar also is guaranteed a summer associate position with the firm after completing his or her second year of law school. The students also will be eligible for a $4,000 third-year scholarship.
In addition to Duke, the schools participating in the program are: Emory University, Howard University, North Carolina Central University, the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina, the University of South Carolina, the University of Virginia and Wake Forest University.
The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund partners with Womble Carlyle to distribute the firm’s scholarships at Howard and North Carolina Central Universities, both of which are historically black public universities supported by the Fund. Womble Carlyle will fund the scholarships and will work jointly with the Fund to choose the student recipients. Each of the seven remaining schools nominate its top student candidates for the awards. Womble Carlyle will then interview all of the candidates from each school and select the scholarship recipients.
