WASHINGTON, D.C., September 11, 2007 — LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – Winston & Strawn LLP announced today that prominent international arbitration attorney Mark Clodfelter has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as of counsel. Clodfelter will focus his practice on international arbitration, including investor-State arbitration.
Clodfelter is returning to private practice after serving for the past seven years as the U.S. State Department’s assistant legal adviser for international claims and investment disputes. In this position, he directed the representation of the United States (U.S.) in international arbitration proceedings, including ICSID-AF and UNCITRAL proceedings under the investment chapter of NAFTA, in which he led his office’s unblemished record of success. He also led the representation of the U.S. before the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, the U.N. Compensation Commission and in a major dispute before the Permanent Court of Arbitration under a bilateral investment incentive agreement.

CLODFELTER JOINS WINSTON – Add One
In his previous private sector work, Clodfelter represented a wide range of clients in international arbitrations before the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the American Arbitration Association, the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal and ad hoc tribunals. He also advised on foreign and domestic business operations, including company organization, sales representation agreements, foreign corrupt practices and real estate investments.
Clodfelter has served as an arbitrator in international and commercial cases and is a member of both the International Roster of Neutrals of the International Center on Dispute Resolution and the Panel of Commercial Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. He is a member of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Group of Experts on Investor-State Dispute Resolution, and for seven years taught international commercial arbitration as an adjunct professor in the graduate program of Georgetown University Law Center. Clodfelter is a former White House Fellow and earned his juris doctor from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was on the editorial staff of the Journal of Law Reform. He earned a master’s degree in political science and a bachelor’s degree in Russian and Eastern European studies, both from the University of Michigan.
