WASHINGTON, D.C., October 12, 2009 — Winston & Strawn LLP is pleased to announce that Lori Wittlin, a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, has been chosen by the Washington Business Journal as one of Washington’s “Rising Stars” in the publication’s sixth annual “Women Who Mean Business” awards. The award is designed to honor the region’s most influential business women across all industries and professions. Wittlin is one of only five women and the only attorney honored. The award will be presented at a special event hosted by the publication and co-sponsored by McGuire Woods and SAP America, Inc. on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at The Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Wittlin, the youngest female partner in Winston & Strawn’s D.C. office, is already an influential member of the business community. Fortune 200 clients rely on her counsel to navigate them through the legal landscape when they face high stake controversies with the Internal Revenue Service worth billions of dollars. She has been involved in legislative, regulatory, litigation, and administrative matters of importance to members of the utility industry and industry groups.
Wittlin is active in the legal community and is a member of the Tax Section of the D.C. Bar and the Energy Tax Council, which is comprised of a select group of senior tax executives from the country’s largest investor-owned public utilities and their closest tax advisors, and often speaks at Council meetings.
Wittlin is also highly involved in her own community. She is an active member of Hadassah, an international volunteer women’s organization, and was a charter member of the D.C. Chapter’s young professionals group. Additionally, Wittlin participated in a community-wide pro bono clinic in 2008 to assist survivors of Nazi ghettoes in obtaining reparations from the German government. As an active alumna, Wittlin is a prominent supporter of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Center for Jewish Studies and also supports the University’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, which promotes science education for children.
Wittlin received a B.A. in International Studies, with distinction, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received a J.D., with distinction, from Emory University School of Law in 1998, where she was executive managing editor of the Emory Law Journal and the recipient of the Robert W. Woodruff fellowship.
