OAKLAND – LAWFUEL – Law News Network – United States Attorney Kevin V. Ryan announced that Jzon Edward Buckner was sentenced today to 90 months in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a total of $2,389 in restitution for two unarmed bank robberies he committed in San Lorenzo, California. This sentence is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Buckner pleaded guilty on August 15, 2006 to two counts of unarmed bank robbery in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2113(a). According to the plea agreement, Mr. Buckner admitted to robbing a branch of Citibank, located in San Lorenzo, California, on the morning of December 16, 2005. He approached the bank teller and handed her a demand note. As a result, the teller handed Mr. Buckner $1,878. Mr. Buckner also admitted to robbing a branch of Washington Mutual Bank, located in San Lorenzo, California, on the morning of January 11, 2006. Like the Citibank robbery, he approached the bank teller and handed her a demand note. As a result, the teller handed Mr. Buckner $1,011.

Mr. Buckner, 31, of Castro Valley, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 23, 2006. He was charged with two counts of unarmed bank robbery in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2113(a).

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge D. Lowell Jensen following Mr. Buckner’s guilty plea on both counts. Judge Jensen sentenced Mr. Buckner to 90 months imprisonment and three years supervised release on each of the two counts, with the sentences to run concurrently. Judge Jensen also ordered the defendant to pay a total of $2,389 in restitution to the two banks. Mr. Buckner is already in custody, and will begin serving his sentence immediately.

George Bevan, Vineet Gauri, and Merry Jean Chan are the Assistant U.S. Attorneys who prosecuted the case with the assistance of Margaret Glyer, Noble Hughes, and Patty Lau. The prosecution is the result of a nine-month investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
