Baker McKenzie Reiterates Support for Marriage Equality in Australia Ahead of Vote

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In September, Australians will be provided the opportunity to vote on same-sex marriage in Australia via a postal survey. Baker McKenzie reiterates its support for marriage equality in Australia ahead of the vote.

Baker McKenzie national managing partner, Anthony Foley stated: “As a Firm, we want to reiterate our support for marriage equality. We are committed as a Firm locally and globally to creating and maintaining a supportive and inclusive working environment where individuals of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, can succeed professionally and fully contribute to the goals of the Firm. The diversity within Baker McKenzie is what makes us strong and we will always work to build and celebrate a culture which will enable all of our people to flourish.”

Consistent with these values, Baker McKenzie was party to a letter to Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull advocating against the plebiscite on anti-discrimination and human rights grounds. The firm is also a signatory to the Australian Marriage Equality open letter supporting marriage equality.

Anthony further commented: “The next few weeks are likely to see some intensive public debates in the press and on social media in relation to marriage equality. It is crucial that everyone in our Firm feels supported and valued and that all discussions and behaviours in this debate are respectful, calm and constructive.”

In a step further, Anthony affirmed Baker McKenzie’s commitment to diversity, saying: “Diversity is a cornerstone of our culture. We believe an inclusive workplace gives clients true insight and exceptional service. This isn’t only good for business, but the right thing to do.”
