Bill Cosby’s Lawyer Responds To Rape Allegations

The US has become aghast that beloved Bill Cosby could really be someone who had sexually abused women at the height of his fame.  Could this be true?  His lawyer, John Schmitt, did the lawyering on the swirling rumors and accusations:  He would not dignify the “decade-old, discredited” claims with a response.

He released a statement on Cosby’s website in response to allegations from around a dozen women saying in part:

“The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true,” the statement read in part. “Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment.”

CBS reported that the allegations resurfaced in October when a comedian, Hannibal Buress, assailed Cosby during a stand-up performance at the Trocadero, calling him a “rapist.” His remarks were captured on video and posted online. The video then went viral.

The accusations have caused the 77-year-old Cosby to cancel television appearances on “The Late Show” with David Letterman and “The Queen Latifah Show.”

Schmitt says these allegations were discredited years ago, and that there will be “no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives.”

The Guardian newspaper reported:

On Monday, Cosby’s Twitter account asked fans to create internet memes using photos of him. The exercise quickly blew up, when people responded with references to allegations of sexual assault made by a number of women.

On Thursday, the Washington Post published an editorial by Barbara Bowman, who accused Cosby of drugging and raping her on multiple occasions during a period in the mid-1980s when he was mentoring her as a young actress. During those years, Cosby was starring in The Cosby Show as Cliff Huxtable, a loveable but silly family patriarch. It was the most watched show on television.

On Friday, Bowman told CNN she went to a lawyer in 1989 to discuss legal action against Cosby but “he laughed me right out of the office”. Bowman said she “just gave up”, but added that when another woman took legal action against Cosby years later, she decided to lend her support.
