Wynn Williams has put up its hand to obtain the Christchurch Crown warrant following the retirement from the role of Crown Solicitor of Raymond Donnelly partner Mark Zarifeh, who was appointed to the role in 2016. He resigned from the warrant last year.
The position has been assumed by Raymond Donnelly partner Barnaby Hawes but the Crown Law Office is opening the role with an unspecified number of interested parties, although Wynn Williams is known to be one firm that is interested.
Wynn Williams, with 25 partners and offices in both Christchurch and Auckland, has a strong litigation team with partners Joshua Shaw, who has prosecution experience, Josh Taylor and Shane Campbell, who all have litigation and dispute resolution experience as well as former Meredith Connell senior associate Tim McGuigan.
The appointment of a new Christchurch crown solicitor next month could break one law firm’s 109-year hold on the position.Raymond Donnelly & Co partner Mark Zarifeh was appointed Christchurch crown solicitor in 2016 and resigned the warrant last year. The seven-partner firm has held the warrant since 1914.
Sixteen private firms are contracted to provide Crown prosecution services, paid more than $40 million from Crown Law for their services.
