law office marketing plan

Ben Thomson* – Having a successful law office requires more than just providing the best quality legal services. You need to create a comprehensive marketing plan that will help you build your lawyer credentials and attract more clients. With a well-thought-out strategy, you can maximize visibility and boost your bottom line.

But how do you best go about creating an effective law office marketing strategy?

Key Elements to a Great Law Firm Marketing Plan:

  • Define your target market and create a clear message
  • Set clear and measurable law marketing goals
  • Set a clearly defined financial budget for your law marketing

Before you can create an effective marketing plan for your law office, you need to define who your target audience is.

Ask those key questions: Who are the people and organizations that will benefit from your services? What is your niche or your target market?

Understanding the demographic makeup of your target market will help you create more personalized messaging that speaks directly to their needs. Once you’ve identified your target market, you can begin to tailor-make a law office marketing plan to reach this audience.

Creating a Law Office Marketing Plan That Drives Results

Knowing your market will let you authentically craft your messages. I wrote some of these law marketing tactics in an earlier article which you may see here.

Your target market should consist of both potential clients and referral sources – such as other attorneys, corporations, insurance companies, etc.

Spend some time defining who your current clients and referral sources are, as well as specific attributes of those groups.

Are you targeting individuals or companies? What geographical area do they live in? What practice areas interest them most?

You’ll also be able to track and measure the effectiveness of your efforts by analyzing which marketing tactics pull in results from within that particular target market.

How To Set Your Law Firm Marketing Strategy

In order to track the success of your law office marketing strategies, it’s important to define your desired outcomes before launching any campaigns and carefully work out what and how you want to achieve your results.

Setting specific objectives for each strategy and track their progress throughout the campaign.

Measurement can include numbers such as web traffic and conversion rates, or qualitative data like surveys and customer reviews. You can then monitor your activities and how effective they are.

Consider running an A/B test before you launch a larger campaign. This will allow you to compare different versions of the same advertisement or marketing material and see which one performs better.

It’s also important to create benchmarks for each strategy so you can adjust your goals as needed. Utilizing analytics platforms such as Google Analytics and applying strategic metrics will help you improve your law office marketing plan over time, leading to greater success with your campaigns.

This will help focus your energy into campaigns that actually produce results. This might involve very traditional marketing methods (word-of-mouth, billboards etc) or more sophisticated digital marketing efforts.

Once all your goals are identified, create an outline to specify how you’re going to track progress towards them.

Establish an appropriate timeline and take note of any external factors that could affect success or failure as well. Make sure your objectives are realistic, measurable and achievable so that they are attainable within a given budget and timeframe.

Define Your Financial Goals

When creating a law office marketing plan, it’s crucial to set reasonable financial goals. This includes deciding how much money you want to allocate for each campaign, what ROI you want to achieve, and other performance benchmarks.

Obviously you know your financial position and when working out your legal marketing strategies make sure you can set financial goals and objectives that align with your budget.

Developing and implementing any marketing plan is going to take some degree of investment in time and money and you want to get the necessary ‘bang for buck’.

Make sure to ask yourself questions about the cost-effectiveness of any decisions and track progress regularly. With careful consideration, it’s possible to create a profitable strategy that will provide tangible returns on investment over time.

Calculate your expenses such as marketing services, advertising costs and salaries, then determine a budget that ensures you’ll make a profit while also delivering the results you desire.

You should also consider setting goals related to customer acquisition and retention.

Track metrics like website visits, call volumes, customer lifetime value (LTV), and customer satisfaction ratings and monitor those benchmarks so that you can make informed decisions to help your existing or potential clients.

For lawyers its important to speak with authority and use references and testimonials to build the authority you need to achieve.

Build on your expertise and your geographic or other factors that can differentiate yourself – and be imaginative if possible too.

all blacks used for law firm marketing

We recently wrote about Australian law firm HPX that used the All Blacks rugby strategy to market their firm – this is something that would resonate in their area geographically but also using the best of the strategies to build their network.

Set targets for generating leads, conversions or inquiries so that you can measure progress and make adjustments as needed. As a legal business owner, it’s important to have realistic expectations when it comes to developing an effective marketing strategy.

As a law office, you should also take full advantage of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Regularly post content related to your practice on these sites, including links to blog posts or articles you have written on relevant topics.

Engage with other experts and legal contacts to ensure that your practice is visible to your target audience online.

Additionally, consider hosting seminars or events as part of your website marketing plan. This will allow potential clients the opportunity to interact directly with you and learn more about your services in an educational setting.

Law Firm Online Marketing Advice

Online marketing for law firms is clearly a cornerstone of any modern law office marketing plan and you need to ensure you have taken steps to optimize your website to make sure it is friendly on search engines.

Creating a Law Office Marketing Plan That Drives Results

You can check the article about digital marketing and law firm online marketing at the article here.

This includes doing keyword research such as finding the most-searched terms in your area and making sure that those keywords appear throughout your page copy. There is plenty of tips on this, but at the end of the day focus on your key areas of expertise in your practice.

Focus on increasing visibility for your practice in the top search engines, such as Google and Bing, by creating keyword-rich content that speaks to potential clients’ issues and queries.

You will also want to make sure your site is optimized for mobile devices, as an increasing number of users are searching from their phones or tablets. Mobile search continues to soar in popularity and having a properly optimized site is critical for online law marketing efforts to work properly.

In addition to optimizing content, consider using SEO tools like Google Analytics to better understand how people find you and which sources bring the most traffic to your site. This sort of research is critical to understanding who is coming to your website and the nature of the traffic and keywords used.

Design a website optimized for lead generation, evaluate existing link structure and use analytics tools to monitor key performance metrics. You want to know that you can develop leads that will help build your targeted audience for your quality contact and develop your own email marketing efforts.

Traditional Law Firm Marketing Tactics

Traditional marketing and advertising techniques should not be neglected. Develop a comprehensive suite of marketing materials that is tailored to your target audience.

These materials may include brochures, pamphlets, flyers advertisements, direct mail pieces etc.

Create content with an SEO strategy in mind – focus on creating content that will rank highly in search engine results. Utilize multimedia such as videos and podcasts to infuse your law firm’s message into potential client’s lives in a dynamic way.

Build an online presence by creating professional social media accounts, website, and blog. I’ve written about these in my last article on lawyer marketing and you should focus on social media platforms you feel comfortable using.

Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are free to use and can reach potential clients in your area.

Create a Clear Law Firm ‘Brand’

Develop a clear brand identity for your law firm and incorporate it into any graphic design work that you do for other digital assets – including website design.

Make sure your content, whether it be blogs or digital marketing campaigns, remains consistent with topics that are relevant to your target audience’s interests and the law firm branding message that you want to reinforce for clients.

Also consider becoming actively involved in local professional organizations which will aid in advertising and networking efforts. These are opportunities that can pay off big time.

Create brochures, business cards, and flyers for your law office and include information about the services that you offer. These materials will also contain contact information.

Creating a Law Office Marketing Plan That Drives Results

Develop a public relations plan and initiate press releases to generate coverage of your legal practice or causes related to the work that your firm provides. Use ‘HARO’ for some impact-driven effects using reporters who want legal assistance for stories.

Engage in face-to-face meetings with potential clients at local events or seminars so that they can get a better idea of who you are and what you have to offer. Nothing beats the face-to-face meeting for impact and authenticity.

Utilize search engine optimization strategies to increase website visibility on search engines, such as placing key phrases within content or increasing the number of backlinks pointing to your site’s homepage.
