Mr. Cooper joins the firm as a partner leading Nix, Patterson & Roach’s intellectual property section, and he and Partner Edward Lewis Von Hohn are opening the firm’s new, high-tech office at Williams Square in Las Colinas, Texas, in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Mr. Cooper’s background in science and technology and his experience in patent licensing and litigation will help the firm better serve its growing list of intellectual property clients.
A registered patent attorney, Mr. Cooper practiced at the law firm of Sidley & Austin before founding his own firm in 2003. He has handled a number of significant intellectual property cases for both plaintiffs and defendants, including the DataTreasury litigation and the successful defense of an $800 million damage claim against Compaq Computer Corporation. Mr. Cooper has also obtained a recovery of $2.85 million in attorneys’ fees, one of the largest to date in an intellectual property matter. He is a graduate of the Southern Methodist University School of Law, where he served as articles editor for the Computer Law Review and Technology Journal, founded the SMU Intellectual Property Organization and was appointed a member of the Barristers. Before entering law school, Mr. Cooper attended the University of Colorado, where he received a master’s degree in molecular biology and biotechnology and a baccalaureate in neuroscience with honors.
