(PRWEB) December 24, 2005 — (Case No. 02-L-04474) — In a unanimous verdict, a jury in Chicago, Illinois returned a verdict of over $17 million to a 7-year-old child with cerebral palsy.

A jury of nine women and three men ordered St. Anthony Hospital in Cook County, Chicago and Dr. Jacques Hercules to pay $17 million in damages for Dr. Hercules’ delay in delivering the child while the mother suffered a seizure during birth in 1998. Dr. Hercules, the in-house obstetrician at St. Anthony Hospital, failed to perform an emergency cesarean section during the mother’s seizure. Dr. Hercules waited 20 to 25 minutes until Selene Araujo’s obstetrician, Dr. Florentino Leong, arrived at St. Anthony Hospital to deliver the baby, resulting in the child suffering severe brain damage and cerebral palsy. The verdict came after one day of deliberations after two weeks of trail in Chicago, Illinois.

The jury found no negligence on Dr. Leong’s care of Ms. Araujo. South Carolina attorneys Mark D. Clore and Samuel K. Allen, of the law firm of Anastopoulo & Clore, LLC and Texas attorney Jaime Pena, of the law firm of Pena & Baudhuin, LLP, represented Ms. Araujo. Mr. Clore said the large damage award is needed to provide intensive medical care and therapy for the daughter, Evelyn, who could need it for 60 or more years.
