Los Angeles and New York, August 9, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – The national law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP announced today the promotion of two attorLneys. Laurie Ruckel and Karen Thorland were elected to be partners of the firm. Ms. Ruckel previously served as senior counsel and Ms. Thorland was an associate at Loeb & Loeb prior to their promotions.

Karen R. Thorland is a partner in the Los Angeles office and member of the Litigation Department. Ms. Thorland has experience in a broad range of commercial litigation and intellectual property matters including copyright and trademark litigation, trade secrets, civil fraud, business torts, rights of publicity and privacy, First Amendment issues, entertainment contractual disputes and appeals. Ms. Thorland has represented prominent entertainment industry clients including major and independent film studios, producers and music companies.

Ms. Thorland has undertaken pro bono publico work on behalf of Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles and the ACLU Foundation. In 2003, Ms. Thorland was honored to receive the First Amendment Award from the ACLU Foundation of Southern California. She was also selected as a Rising Star by Southern California Super Lawyers in 2004. Ms. Thorland is a member of the Copyright Society of the United States and the Los Angeles Copyright Society.

Ms. Thorland received her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 1994. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Communications Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1990.

Laurie S. Ruckel is a partner in the New York office and a member of the Tax and Wealth Services Department. Ms. Ruckel concentrates her practice on estate planning, estate and trust administration and estate taxation. Her experience encompasses wills and trust agreements, estate tax audits, succession planning for closely-held businesses and prenuptial agreements. Her principal clients are high-net-worth individuals, closely-held businesses, real estate clients and executives of publicly held companies.

Ms. Ruckel is a member of the Lenox Hill Hospital Professional Advisors Board.

Ms. Ruckel earned her J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1982. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from Barnard College in 1979, graduating cum laude.
