NZ Law Tech News – Dragon Naturally Speaking Goes Mobile – Big Time

Business technology

The ability of new technology to increase the lawyers’ efficiency continues to expand along with the technology driven by new AI apps.  But now, with the introduction into New Zealand of the Dragon ‘Anywhere’ app, there is a true ability for an increasingly mobile legal workforce to maintain and increase their productivity with the power of this ‘anywhere’ app.

Voice recognition technology is one of the most obvious efficiency drivers for lawyers and now the efficiencies have been increased with products like Philips voice recorder app, which permits high end editing functionality combined with the ability to easily handle urgent recording (including safe vehicle use).

Dragon Anywhere applies to both Android and iOS mobile devices and brings the top-end voice recognition technology to mobile devices to help service an increasingly mobile legal workforce.

For many years barristers, solicitors and others who have required dictation technology to increase productivity when out of the office have suffered something of a bugbear by way of erratic or less than ideal technology fraught with potential issues both at the tech and accuracy end of the scene.

The new cloud-based technology (it is transmitted via the cloud through 256-bit encryption) is the only mobile dictation solution that permits continuous dictation without time or length limits. The increased power of the technology permits documents to not only be recorded, but also edited and shared via email or other tools like Dropbox or saved to apps like Evernote.

On The Go Lawyers

For the lawyer-on-the-run the flexibilty and power is unsurpassed in such mobile devices but there is also another key advantage for lawyers and others. The technology permits synchronisation and a consisternt workflow with laptop or tablet devices and also with subscription rates that cover all devices, which of course includes the use of legal terms, te reo and any other recognition that the personalised system permits. This is no ‘soft’ version of the desktop edition, but a fully-powered, all-encompassing software that is a productivity tool par excellence that ties in perfectly with mobile devices like the Philips LFH7400 (below).

The Downloadable Recording App

The Philips LFH7400 Mobile Recording app integrates with Dragon to provide all the functionality that comes with Dragon’s desktop software, working with iOS and Android. The app can be downloaded at the link –  https://itunes.apple.com/app/philips-dictation-recorder/id418344277 and is also availble as a free 30 day trial for and then $180 per annum thereafter. One of the key advantages for lawyers and others who want to increase document turnaround time is the app’s powerful ability to create simple, one-touch recording for car use or elsewhere, combined with its ability to then edit and send recordings for document production.

Slaughter and May today announces a major appointment in London.  Sir David Green CB QC, former Director of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), will join the firm as a senior consultant on 22 October, six months after his departure from the SFO. Sir David was at the helm at the SFO for 6 years and is widely acknowledged to have strengthened it significantly.

Sir David’s appointment enhances Slaughter and May’s existing expertise in advising companies and individuals facing investigations by criminal and regulatory agencies in the UK and around the world. He brings a unique perspective to this key area of risk for the firm’s clients. He will not work on matters in which he was involved while at the SFO.

Sir David Green said: “I am delighted to be joining a firm which has such a deep understanding of the interests and needs of companies and individuals facing criminal investigations across the world. Slaughter and May is a natural fit for me and I look forward to being a part of the firm’s global investigations practice, which rightly enjoys a pre-eminent reputation.”

The firm regularly advises clients on major multi-jurisdictional investigations and has played significant roles in many of the most important inquiries and regulatory investigations of the past decade.  These include bribery and corruption, fraud, cartels, financial and takeover regulation and tax.

The firm’s investigations team has advised on matters of the significance of the Rolls-Royce and Olympus cases, a number of ongoing SFO investigations into major corporates, the LIBOR and FX investigations and the air cargo and passenger cartels for British Airways.  Wynne Mok has also recently been appointed a partner in Hong Kong, joining from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission where she was a Director of Enforcement.

Jonny Cotton, co-head of Slaughter and May’s Global Investigations Group, said: “This is another superb appointment for our global investigations team.  Our ability to hire somebody of David’s calibre reflects a period of sustained success underpinned by a series of high profile mandates.”

Richard Swallow, co-head of Slaughter and May’s Global Investigations Group, said: “David will give us a unique perspective and his arrival at the firm is great news for our clients.  The appointment of David, and Wynne in Hong Kong, reinforce the firm’s commitment to, and existing expertise in, this very significant area.”

Steve Cooke, senior partner of Slaughter and May, added: “David’s appointment is another step in the ongoing success of the key contentious side of our practice, which is of ever-increasing importance to clients around the globe.  We recently promoted two dispute resolution partners in London in addition to Wynne’s arrival in Hong Kong – collectively these appointments will build on our outstanding reputation for managing high profile disputes and investigations on a global scale.”
