UK Law Hourly Rates Take An Upward Hike Tom Borman, Big Law contributing editor Britain's top law firms have hiked hourly fee rates by nearly 40 percent for the top 10 law firms according to a new survey from PwC. The survey of the UK's top 100 law firmsshowed that average hourly rates at top 10 firms reach £449 in 2024, up from £321 in 2019. The fee income had grown by 11.6 percent and the entry-level salaries had grown to £150,000 at magic circle firms. The head rise in billing rates comes as London's legal market experiences intense competition from US law firms, which traditionally command higher fees—sometimes exceeding $2,000 per hour for top partners. The competition from US law firms has created an unexpected advantage for UK firms, providing cover for their own rate increases, with senior UK partners now charging upwards of £1,000 per hour. "UK elite law firms have capitalized on market conditions through strategic specialization, inflationary adjustments, and post-pandemic corporate activity," said Mark Anderson, who leads PwC's global legal and professional services sector. "The expanding US presence in London has been particularly influential in this pricing evolution." Market Legal Activity The rate increases coincide with a period of robust activity across transactional and litigation practices, although many caution about headwinds as clients increasingly focus on their legal spending as they face their own cost pressures. The competitive legal market has triggered a compensation arms race, with all five magic circle firms—Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Linklaters, Clifford Chance, A&O Shearman, and Slaughter and May—boosting newly qualified lawyer salaries by 20 percent to £150,000. But it was not just cost pressures that are being felt by the major law firms, but also the threats from cybersecurity developments The Cybersecurity Threat The legal sector's risk landscape is changing quickly as cybersecurity has emerged as the predominant concern, with 90 percent of firms showing significant concern particularly following the incidents like the LockBit attack on A&OShearman last year. Firms are also rapidly growing their technological transformation, with artificial intelligence adoption nearly doubling and nearly 90 percent of top 100 firms report implementing or testing generative AI tools, which is up from 55 percent in 2023. While UK firms have successfully narrowed the pricing gap with their US counterparts, sustaining this growth is something that is by no means a given. The growth in revenues has to be balanced between competitive pricing and keeping the clients happy, which can be a tricky balancing act as rising costs and developing client expectations create their own issues for law firms.
