US Law Announcements – Goldman Sachs Chief IP Counsel Joins Chadbourne & Parke LLP as Co-Chair of IP Group – LawFuel Legal Newswire

John A. Squires To Help Strengthen International Practice Expansion

NEW YORK – January 8, 2009 – LawFuel – Legal Newswire – The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP today announced that John A. Squires has joined the Firm as a partner in the intellectual property practice in the New York office. Along with partner Walter G. Hanchuk, Mr. Squires will co-chair the Firm’s intellectual property practice, and strengthen the international expansion of the practice. Prior to joining Chadbourne, Mr. Squires was Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York.

“John is a high-profile intellectual property lawyer who will play a vital part in one of the Firm’s major objectives, which is to continue to grow an international, full-service intellectual property practice,” said Chadbourne Managing Partner Charles K. O’Neill. “This move ensures strategic growth and demonstrates our continued commitment to build the IP practice as we move forward. We are tremendously pleased to have John join the Firm.”

Mr. Squires, 46, founded the patent practice at Goldman Sachs nine years ago. During his tenure, he broadened the legal discipline globally to encompass branding and trademark issues, operational and technology matters, and licensing transactions and investment due diligence, thereby fashioning one of the premier intellectual property platforms in the financial services industry.

Mr. Squires has also maintained a longstanding industry leadership role. Since 2004, he has chaired the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) IP Subcommittee, where he has been a proponent for improving patent quality and commercial competitiveness in the U.S. Mr. Squires has co-authored an examination quality program with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and most recently been a sponsor, supporter and advocate for the agency’s Peer-to-Patent pilot project.

For the last several years, Mr. Squires has also worked with both houses of Congress as well as the regulatory community to bring about balanced, but long needed improvements in U.S. patent law. In June 2007, he testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on innovation policy reform and most recently testified before the Federal Trade Commission on the evolving IP marketplace.

In effectuating policy changes in U.S. law, he has filed numerous amicus briefs with the United States Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, including in eBay v. MercExchange and In re Bilski, and has become widely recognized in both the financial services and technology sectors as one of the country’s top experts on the issue of patent-eligible technologies. He recently commissioned and co-authored a successful amicus brief for Regulatory DataCorp Inc. (RDC) on the seminal issue of “business process” patents in Bilski, one of the most watched patent cases this decade. (RDC is an anti-terrorist financing technology joint venture founded by Goldman Sachs.) In a rarely invoked judicial procedure, RDC’s brief was selected from over 40 others for oral argument alongside the parties. In 2008, Mr. Squires was nominated to the IP Hall of Fame, a program run by Intellectual Asset Management Magazine.

At Chadbourne, Mr. Squires will continue to represent the intellectual property interests of Goldman Sachs, RDC and SIFMA.

“I look forward to continuing to work with John as co-chair of the Firm’s IP group,” said Mr. Hanchuk. “His exemplary leadership, experience and skill set will make the practice significantly stronger in all aspects. Having worked with John for nearly two decades, in both private practice and as a strategic partner and client, he has distinguished himself as a visionary and leader in the IP community.”

Before joining Goldman Sachs, Mr. Squires held the position of General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Honeywell, Inc., and worked as an associate and senior associate for the intellectual property group at Rogers & Wells, LLP and as an associate focusing on large-scale patent infringement litigation and technology matters for Morgan & Finnegan, LLP.

Mr. Squires received his B.S. in Chemistry from Bucknell University, and earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he was a member of The Order of the Coif and staff editor of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review. He is also registered with the USPTO.
