26 January 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Marcos D. Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; R. Alexander Acosta, Assistant Attorney General, Civil Rights Division; Michael S. Clemens, Special Agent-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that defendant, James Tackticos, of Miramar, Florida, pleaded guilty to two (2) counts of violating federal civil rights laws, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 242, before United States District Court Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The Information charged Tackticos, while employed as a road patrol deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office, with pulling over immigrants for either DUI or other traffic infractions in the Lake Worth area of Palm Beach County on six (6) occasions in 2003, and that on each occasion, Tackticos stole cash from the individuals stopped. The amounts of money alleged to be taken ranged from $50 to $5,434.
Tackticos faces a maximum statutory sentence of one (1) year in prison per count. Pursuant to the terms of the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to pay restitution to each of the six (6) victims and to relinquish his Florida law enforcement certification.
Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Lourie and Trial Attorney Christine Dunn, Civil Rights Division, Department of Justice.
