Knights Expands South East Reach with £16.6 Million Birkett Long Acquisition

Knights PLC UK law

Knights, one of the UK’s fastest-growing professional services firms, has taken a major step forward in the South East by acquiring Essex-based Birkett Long for an initial £10 million following last year’s downtrend in transactional work and layoffs from the firm.

The move brings around 90 lawyers and 10 financial advisers into the Knights fold, expanding its national team to over 1,250 professionals across 28 locations and pushing group revenues past £200 million.

Birkett Long, with offices in Basildon, Chelmsford, and Colchester, has a strong reputation for serving both corporate and private clients and reported revenues of £14.7 million for the year ending 31 May 2024. The deal also includes Birkett Long’s independent financial advisory arm, giving Knights the rare ability to offer both legal and wealth advisory services under one roof-a significant advantage for clients in the region.

David Beech, CEO of Knights, commented, “We’re delighted to welcome the Birkett Long team, strengthening our presence around London and giving us an entry into wealth advisory-a service we’ve been keen to add. Birkett Long’s broad offering and culture are an excellent fit, and we’re confident this acquisition sets the stage for further growth.”

Martin Hopkins, Managing Partner at Birkett Long, added, “Joining Knights after a period of growth and modernisation allows us to build on our track record, offer a broader range of services to our clients, and create even more career opportunities for our people. We look forward to unlocking new opportunities together.”

The total value of the deal is £16.6 million, with £10 million paid upfront and the remaining £6.6 million to be paid over the next three years. Completion is expected on 13 June.
