16 Michael Heron QC
It’s been a busy year for the former Solicitor-General, with matters ranging from handling the immigration inquiry into the handling of Czech drug smuggler Karel Sroubek by Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway (below) identifying risks to Ministers handling such issues, to representing an unnamed sportsman involved in the alleged financing of an international drug syndicate.
But it was not just immigration issues relating to drug dealers and financiers that involved the busy QC, who has increasingly found himself in demand for a range of briefs and appointments, pushing him further up the Power List as one of the government’s go to Silks.
Prosecuting for the SFO and handling often complex and politically sensitive enquiries, he has also been involved in working with Police on their handling of the March 15 Mosque shootings and acting for the State Services Commission on the budget leak issues.
Sports law issues have also loomed large. He is judicial officer for New Zealand Rugby and SANZAAR, a National Commissioner for New Zealand Cricket and a member of the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct Commission and Disputes Resolution Committee.
Former Solicitor General Michael Heron is increasingly becoming the go-to Silk for enquiries and regulatory work, as well as showing an entrepreneurial streak with the development of his online mediation tool CODR.
