HOUSTON, AUGUST 30, 2006 – LAWFUEL – Legal News Network – Dennis P. Duffy, former vice president and associate general counsel for labor and employment for Time Warner Inc., joined Baker Botts as a partner in the firm’s Labor and Employment section on August 3, 2006. He is based in its Houston office.

Before Time Warner, Duffy served as general counsel for the University of Houston and the University of Houston System. He was also the first general counsel of the U.S. Office of Compliance in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for enforcing several labor and employment laws that applied to employment with the U.S. Congress and legislative branch of the federal government.

“Dennis brings a wealth of labor and employment legal expertise — in both the private and public sectors — that will be a valuable addition to our team of lawyers in the practice area,” said Baker Botts Managing Partner Walt Smith.

Baker Botts labor and employment lawyers try various types of disputes in state and federal courts and before arbitrators, such as employment discrimination and wrongful discharge claims, ERISA claims, wage claims and collective actions under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and disputes over non-competes and trade secrets.

“Dennis’ work in state and federal courts and in the arbitration process, as well as his international work for Time Warner, has provided him insight into how labor and employment laws have evolved over the past decade,” said Richard Brann, section chair of Baker Botts’ Labor and Employment group. “His ability to practice in that wide variety of venues will provide additional flexibility for our clients in dealing with complex workplace issues. Moreover, his recent experience with Time Warner gives him unique insight regarding client expectations for legal services, as well as an in-house counsel’s perspective on the value of preventive measures as cost avoidance tools.”

Duffy received his A.B. degree from Princeton University and his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the California and Texas Bars and is licensed to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Fifth and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Northern, Eastern and Central Districts of California and the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas.

He is board certified in labor and employment law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and has been elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the National Employment Law Institute.
