Medical Identity Theft: Understanding and Protecting Against the Risk

Medical Identity Theft: Understanding and Protecting Against the Risk

Medical identity theft is at epidemic levels. In the first four months of 2015, nearly 100 million medical records were stolen by hackers—a 150% increase over the prior four years combined.

During the past 12 months, half of all health care organizations in the country have been breached. Hackers are targeting personal medical information because it is more than 10 times as valuable on the black market as personal financial information. Medical identity theft is also more difficult to detect and can take years to unwind, placing consumers, health care providers, and health insurers at increased risk.

In this webinar, Ballard partners Philip Yannella and Daniel McKenna and of counsel John Devine will discuss the rise in medical identity theft, how it differs from typical identity theft, recent class actions involving medical identity theft, and proactive steps health care providers and health insurers can take to protect themselves.
