Katie Holmes has hired famed Hollywood attorney Bert Fields to represent her in the divorce from Tom Cruise, which she announced on Thursday after lengthy rumors about the health of the couples’ marriage.
Bert Fields has been a famous lawyer in Hollywood. At 83 he is still a high billing attorney who has previously represented Tom Cruise, Madonna and the Beatles. He has also lectured law at both Stanford and Harvard Law School and written a book on Shakespeare, as well as a couple of legal thrillers.
The lawyer representing Katie Holmes is Jonathan Wolfe, who has said that his client has a “personal and private” issue to deal with int he divorce and she is focused on the couple’s daughter.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married in Italy in 2006 following the birth of daughter Suri. Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most wealthy and successful stars, having appeared in recent “Mission Impossible” movies and a large number of highly successful movies prior to the MI franchise, although his later years have shown a downturn in popularity.
Rumors over the marriage have grown in recent years, but the divorce action is bound to involve considerable legal manoeuvrings to secure a fortune that Katie Holmes’ will doubtless be seeking to share in any settlement.
