Legal Career Change: Attorney to Matchmaker
Making a legal career change can present issues, but for a lawyer who changed from law to becoming a matchmaker it has been both similar and different.
Business Insider recently wrote about former lawyer Ann Parnes who used her legal skills, honed by 14 years at law, to understand complex issues and navigate diverse personalities to create her matchmaking business Hello Matchmaking.
Being a business owner required some changes to structure and discipline, she says.
“Unlike the structured environment of a law firm, being my own boss required creating daily routines and self-imposed deadlines. Working 50 hours a week became the norm as I strived to build and sustain a successful matchmaking enterprise.”
“What sets my matchmaking business apart is the diversity of my clients. Ranging from 29 to 77 years old, these professionals share a common thread—they lead busy lives and believe their time is better spent outside the realm of dating apps.”
Guiding them through the matchmaking process involves a detailed questionnaire, permitting clients to understand their vision, values, and desired partner characteristics.
She assists with dress advice, conversational tips and other advice, in a highly personalized approach tailored to the needs of clients.
Legal Career Similarities
Considering the change from law, she says that there are unexpected similarities between the legal career and matchmaking.
In both professions, communication remains a linchpin. “Whether conversing with a witness in the courtroom or counseling a matchmaking client, the ability to lead with empathy, listen actively, and decipher unspoken cues has been instrumental.
“Having interacted with diverse individuals in various situations during my legal career, I’ve developed a comfort level in almost any setting. This ease in communication proves beneficial when working with clients who may feel reserved or embarrassed about expressing their dating preferences or needs.”
What is her advice for those considering a change from law to something else?
“For anyone contemplating a career change, I encourage a thorough self-assessment. Identify your natural abilities, values, and interests, and leverage the insights of friends and mentors. Reach out to professionals in your desired field to gain a deeper understanding of the industry.
