CHICAGO & SAN FRANCISCO– LAWFUEL – Legal News Network –Schiff Hardin LLP will open a San Francisco office, its first on the West Coast, effective January 1, 2007 by joining forces with Morgenstein & Jubelirer LLP. The combined law firms will be named Schiff Hardin LLP and will provide a coast-to-coast presence with other offices in Chicago, Lake Forest, Ill., New York, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, Ga. The addition of Morgenstein & Jubelirer’s 35 attorneys gives Schiff Hardin nearly 400 total attorneys.
Ronald S. Safer, Schiff Hardin’s Managing Partner, expressed the firm’s excitement about combining with Morgenstein & Jubelirer, “This is an important event in Schiff Hardin’s emergence as a national firm. We have worked closely with Morgenstein & Jubelirer on a variety of matters for a number of years. They are outstanding trial lawyers and people. They have broad experience in areas of existing strength at our firm. This combination, coupled with our strong and growing presence in New York, Washington, and Atlanta, will enable us to serve our clients more effectively from coast to coast. We have key clients who have a strong West Coast presence and others who confront litigation or engage in business transactions in that area.”
Mr. Safer added, “Effective January 1, we will have significant capability on the ground in California in almost all aspects of complex civil litigation, including product liability/mass tort, construction, intellectual property, labor and employment, antitrust, and general commercial disputes. We also anticipate quickly expanding our capability beyond litigation. Our partners in our corporate, transactional, finance, real estate, and trusts and estates practices see tremendous opportunities for our firm on the West Coast.”
Morgenstein & Jubelirer founding partner, Eliot S. Jubelirer, highlighted the opportunities presented by the combination for his firm, “We’ve worked with many of the Schiff Hardin attorneys over the years, some for nearly two decades, and we have come to know the very high caliber of their work and the philosophy of how they govern their firm. They look a lot like we do, but on a larger scale. The combination of our firms will not only allow us to work more closely with the Schiff Hardin lawyers but will expand our ability to work more effectively and on a national scale for our clients. Our combined firms will now be able to work on much larger litigation problems in the areas of IP, commercial and mass tort cases, product liability, employment, securities, construction, and environmental law. We think the combination will be a tremendous opportunity for us to expand our practice and enhance our ability to take on larger and more labor intensive engagements and give our younger lawyers a chance to work on national problems that they might not get with a much smaller firm.”
Mr. Jubelirer also emphasized the importance of firm culture: “We never would have considered this combination no matter how good the professional fit was, if we also did not believe Schiff Hardin was compatible with our philosophy of running a law firm based on consensus. We have met with many of the Schiff Hardin partners who we didn’t already know through our shared work, and we have found them to be great people, professionally, and on a personal level. The combined firm, like its counterparts, will be a great place to work.”
