LAWFUEL – Law News Network – R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Guy Fallen, Resident Agent in Charge, Office of Inspector General, Social Security Administration, announced today that Michael Hershorn pled guilty yesterday in Miami Federal District Court before the Honorable Ursula Ungaro-Benages to embezzlement of government monies, as charged in an Indictment filed in April 2006.
According to the Indictment, Hershorn, a licensed psychologist, embezzled and converted to his own use approximately $125,227.80, which he received from the Social Security Administration after he claimed disability and an inability to work as a psychologist. In fact, Hershorn returned to work shortly after filing a disability application with the Social Security Administration, and continued to see patients and bill insurance companies while receiving disability. He continued to work and receive disability benefits for more than three years.
Hershorn faces a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment on the embezzlement count, three years’ supervised release and a fine of $250,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 31, 2006.
Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Office of Inspector General, Social Security Administration. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laurie E. Rucoba.
