New York’s Cleary Gottlieb has made a rare, partner-level hire by appointing well known white-collar litigator Lewis Liman as a senior litigator.

Liman, whose practice focuses on securities litigation and white-collar crime, joins after four years at Wilmer Culter’s New York arm and is expected to start at Clearys’ 70-lawyer Manhattan litigation team in July.

Liman has handled a number of high profile cases at the Washington DC-based firm, including defending Citigroup against claims that the bank compromised analyst independence to win business and for Credit Suisse First Boston, relating to an investigation into IPO allocations.

Liman was an associate at New York powerhouse Cravath Swaine & Moore before working as an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, during which time he was appointed Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney.
