July 30, 2008 (by Otto Smyth)

According to reports by Los Angeles injury lawyers, the supervisors in Los Angeles County have authorized several payments to be made in cases totaling 3.3 million dollars.

These cases are three medical negligence cases and one case that was police misconduct. All of the settlements were unanimously voted in favor of settling the claims.

The first settlement of a lawsuit against Los Angeles that was approved was for police misconduct in the case of Carl Williams who was killed in a police shooting. The incident occurred after a car chase through Walnut Park, when police stated that Williams rammed a police car with two officers in the vehicle. The officers involved shot of 70 rounds and Williams was shot multiple times, stating that Williams used his car as a weapon. An investigator for Williams mother found the officers statements to be inaccurate, the county of Los Angeles then retained their own expert who stated that he could not corroborate the deputies’ statements of the incident. This expert also stated that the sheriff’s investigators collecting of evidence were flawed.

A medical negligence case was settled in the case of a plaintiff identified as Jenny Fernandez who obtained contraceptives from the Dollarhide Health Care Center located in Compton in May of 2004.

Fernandez suit claimed the Dollarhide Health Care Center did not do appropriate testing prior to giving a then pregnant Fernandez birth control. The suit claimed she did not receive appropriate prenatal care that led to injuries to both Fernandez and the newborn. This case was settled for $850,000.

In a second medical negligence case filed the award was $762,500 along with $226,327 in medical bills. This was for a suit concerning Griselda Maldonado where it is claimed that a nurse did not relay information to the doctor during the delivery of Maldonado’s baby. As a result the child was delivered suffering weakness in the right arm.

The third medical negligence case settled was in the amount of $595,000 for the negligent medical treatment of Heidi Verdekel who suffered an epileptic seizure while housed in the Twin Towers Jail. The incident occurred in March 2005 when officials did not transport Verdekel to the hospital for medical treatment for the epileptic seizure and died at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. Verdekel was 29 years old at the time of her death.
