New Dallas Offices

Award is the First for a Texas Law Firm

DALLAS — The global law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP has received Silver Certification in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for commercial interiors (LEED-CI) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its new offices in the Dallas Arts District. According to publicly available USGBC records, this certification is the first of its kind awarded to a law firm in the state of Texas. It is the culmination of a three-year site selection, design, and construction process to promote a green workspace and reduce the Firm’s environmental impact. This effort is the first step of Thompson & Knight’s sustainability initiative, currently in formulation and development.

LEED is an internationally recognized, voluntary system for certifying high-performance green interiors that are healthy, productive places to work; are less costly to operate; and have a reduced environmental footprint. The firm moved into approximately 180,000 square feet on six floors in One Arts Plaza in July 2008. CBRE served as project manager.

Some of Thompson & Knight’s efforts toward the LEED Silver certification include diverting 51 percent of construction waste from landfills (approximately 13 tractor trailers); utilizing energy management systems; and using special adhesives, paint, sealants, carpet, and wood that emit little, if any, contaminants. In addition, 95 percent of the firm’s eligible equipment is Energy Star rated. Thompson & Knight also created a program to educate occupants about green building construction methods and a green cleaning program designed to use only those cleaning products and equipment which have been certified as environmentally friendly.

“Thompson & Knight has historically been recognized for our representation of high-profile and innovative clients in the energy and environmental industries, so it is both gratifying and appropriate for the firm to have earned this certification,” says M. Lawrence Hicks, Jr., the Firm’s Administrative Partner. “From practicing law to global responsibility, Thompson & Knight strives to be a leader and innovator. Achieving LEED Silver certification status for our largest office is a prime example of innovative vision, community responsibility, and hard work that form the foundations of our practice and client service focus.”
