The Trauma of Cruise Ship Rape

Lipcon  Margulies Alsina & Winkleman – If you are a cruise ship rape survivor or someone who experienced any form of sexual assault on a cruise, you may be experiencing a range of emotions that are hard to deal with.

Rape is a traumatic experience, and as such, those that suffer it often are left struggling with many intense unfamiliar feelings. Many rape victims report re-living the experience, feeling anger, anxiety, or sadness. Another common experience of rape survivors is emotional numbing. Trauma victims often feel disconnected from loved ones and friends.

Individuals suffering from the psychological trauma resulting from rape may feel that their responses are “unusual,” but it is important to remember that trauma victims are experiencing normal responses to unusual or uncommon events. Denial, shock, anger, hopelessness, fear, anxiety, social withdrawal, and feelings of numbness are all normal emotional reactions to extreme life events.

According to the New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, individuals suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder have often survived experiences that triggered intense feelings. While rape and trauma victims are capable of experiencing positive emotions, they often report numbing. This is because they require greater levels of positive stimuli in order to access the positive aspects of an experience. Victims of rape and trauma also tend to become more sensitive to negative experiences.

Despite these challenges, rape and trauma survivors are able to experience the full range of positive emotions they could experience before their ordeal after it with help.

If you’ve experienced emotional numbing, it is important to get help. Although you may want to socially isolate yourself, it is important to do the opposite and connect with people. Asking for help from counselors, friends, and clergy can be beneficial.

Turning to lawyer to help you seek justice for the crimes committed against you can also help you regain a sense of empowerment. Volunteering can also empower you and joining a support group and participating in social activities is also incredibly important. While you may not feel like you “want” to participate in these activities, reaching out to others and connecting with them can help you heal over time

Rape and trauma victims should also strive to maintain structure in their lives. Eating regularly, sleeping, and maintaining a normal schedule can help you recover. Letting yourself feel your emotions, whatever they are, is also important. Finally, finding activities that make you feel good and exercise can also help you heal.

If you are a cruise ship rape survivor, it is important to reach out for help. One way that rape survivors use their experience to recover is by becoming advocates for victims and by seeking justice for themselves and others. If you’ve survived rape, it may be helpful to understand your legal rights. A cruise ship rape lawyermay be able to assist you in the aftermath of your trauma, ensure that you understand your rights and help you get the justice you deserve.

Healing is a process and it takes time, but many survivors ultimately find meaning in their experiences.
