icca-logoGlobal arbitration leaders will be mixing and mingling in both Sydney and Queenstown next year, with New Zealand’s hosting of a major arbitration conference featuring some of the country’s leading arbitrators, as well as global guests.

For the first time, the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress, next year in Sydney, will have an “add on event” in Queenstown – the AMINZ–ICCA International Arbitration Day.

The International Council for Commercial Arbitration, ICCA, Congress will be held in Sydney, 15 – 18 April 2018, being the two yearly gathering on international arbitration.

Mediation Credentials for Lawyers

One of the features of the programme will be the ability of lawyers to easily become credentialed by AMINZ by completing a five-day mediation course.

The growth in medition and arbitration has seen an increasing number of lawyers seeking to upskill or develop practices in these areas, with the intense courses offered by AMINZ providing an ideal entry point.

Making Arbitration Work in a Changing World: A Pacific View

Together with the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand, AMINZ, is hosting the 2-yearly gathering on international arbitration.  will be an exceptional event for anyone interested in arbitration.  For the first time ever the ICCA Congress will see an add-on event – the AMINZ–ICCA International Arbitration Day in Queenstown.

Just some of the line-up for the Queenstown event includes New Zealand’s Attorney General, Hon Christopher Finlayson QC, Governor General, Dame Patsy Redding, ICCA President, Donald Donovan and in-coming ICCA president, Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler.   Sir David A R Williams QC and Daniel Kalderimis are also presenting along with Wendy Miles QC, Sir Bernard Rix and Neil Kaplan QBE QC SBS.

The sessions will cover:

  • International law, the Rule of Law and the importance of solving international disputes peaceably
  • Climate Change Disputes and the Rights of Affected Populations
  • International arbitration in a Brave Uncertain New World
  • An arbitration centre for the South Pacific
  • Answers to thorny issues:
    – Should appeals with leave of the court be abolished?
    – Do we need emergency arbitrators?
    – Should we restrict challenges by having an indemnity cost rule?
    – Confidentiality – is it a necessary evil?
  • Korero – A Touch of Kiwi
    – AMINZ Arbitration Appeals Tribunal
    – Arbitration of Trust Disputes
    – Treaty of Waitangi and resolution of Maori disputes?
    – New frontiers in the Pacific and / or Antarctica

Young ICCA will hold an event from 4pm – 5.30pm on Thursday 19 April.  This event is aimed at young practitioners from around the world.

Social events include the launch with a Maori welcome and a gala dinner, both at fine Otago wineries. A partner programme is on offer as well.
